Understanding the Online Learning Experience — for Students, Parents and Teachers

In March 2020, COVID-19 disrupted all our lives in myriad ways — with the education of our children being particularly impacted. Having worked with Canadian independent schools for nearly 25 years, we watched and were impressed by how schools pivoted so quickly from delivering in-person to online education in a physically distanced world. Berlineaton surveyed a handful of schools to gain feedback about this experience and to create actionable insights to improve the experience of students, parents and teachers.

A Profound Experience

To support our independent school clients as they shifted from in-person to online learning in the wake of shutdowns due to COVID-19, Berlineaton’s Data & Insights team designed and administered a survey to three stakeholder groups: parents, students and faculty. Our reporting included analytics and benchmarking. Our objective? To help schools achieve success in this new form of delivery as quickly as possible.

Practical Solutions

Berlineaton’s Online Learning Survey was designed as a pulse check — to gather quick, actionable insights about specific aspects of the online learning experience of students, parents and teachers, including:

  • Demographics: To gather data about grade-level, the current household situation and technology
  • Communication: To gather feedback about how well the school has been communicating with students, families and teachers
  • Online Learning Experience: To gather feedback about student engagement, submission of homework, and access to information, teachers and additional supports (including wellbeing support).
  • Community: To seek feedback about the school’s approach to online learning platform and ability to maintain a community feel
  • Open-ended Feedback: To gather data about what has gone well and what needs improvement or additional support

Bolder Futures

The survey findings helped participating schools to respond, in virtually real-time, to important community feedback and make appropriate adjustments to their online learning offerings in the spring and to plan for the start of the next year.

Are you looking to set a new, bold direction, equip your teams and leaders with new skills, or make your organization stronger?

  • Berlineaton helped me work through staffing changes and a significant workload immediately following the COVID-19 outbreak. Our coaching sessions were very much appreciated, and I was able to re-focus on the strategic goals of our organization, while still leading my team and day-to-day operations. Being able to improve my leadership competencies and navigate the last few months was invaluable to say the least.

  • The emphasis on Strategic Management was important to us, since we didn't want a plan that sat on the shelf after several months of strategic thinking. I found that Berlineaton didn't come to our organization with a preconception of what our strategic plan would look like, but they made an authentic effort to understand the people in our community and be in tune with its ethos, its goals and its people. They gained trust and confidence and continue to work with us on the implementation of our tactical plan.

  • I have worked with Berlineaton since 1999. In that time, I have found the Berlineaton team to be highly-skilled facilitators who consistently create the atmosphere and structure necessary to effectively manage and deliver complex projects. Their Strategy, CI, and People Development methodologies work well in any scenario in which I have seen them applied. Moreover, they create an environment that allows for a tremendous amount of creative, engaging, high-quality work to be completed within very short timelines, and with high levels of staff ownership and support.
